Wouldn’t it be nice...
If every American child had access to clear, consistent K-12 academic standards?
If, no matter where you lived, or what your economic status was, or how many times you moved during your child’s school years, he or she had access to the same educational standards as his or her peers in a different school?
If parents knew what to expect and teachers knew what to teach?
That's the goal of the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) — to create a set of consistent, clear K-12 academic standards in English language arts and mathematics. The Standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our youth need for success in college and careers. The CCSSI was developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. As of January 2011, 46 states and the District of Columbia have voluntarily adopted The Standards. The Michigan Department of Education adopted The Standards in June of 2010.
The National PTA believes states should adopt The Standards. Michigan PTA was one of two states and four districts nationwide selected in 2011 to participate in the third wave of PTA's Common Core State Standards Initiative. The initiative focuses on educating parents on the Common Core State Standards and training parent leaders on effective advocacy skills.
